The Parent and Grandparent Program (PGP) application intake for 2017 has already opened on January 3, 2017. The interested sponsors of PGP have got the time till February 2, 2017 to show their interest or register for the program. However, have you had a chance to look at the new Interest to Sponsor form introduced by Immigration Refugee and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) for the 2017 PGP application intake? Not Yet?

Lets take a look what it looks like.

The IRCC has introduced the Interest to Sponsor form to register for the 2017 Parent and Grandparent Program (PGP). The Canadian citizens and permanent residents interested in sponsoring their parents or grandparents to come to and get Permanent residency in Canada need to fill this short online form to show their interest in the program. Once all the forms are gathered online till February 3, 2017, the IRCC will select the 10,000 entries randomly to invite them for submitting complete application for PGP.

Here are the key details the interested sponsors need to fill in the Interest to Sponsor form.
  • Last name(s)(i.e. the family name, surname)
  • Given name(s)(i.e. the first name)
  • Date of birth
  • Country or territory of birth
  • Main home address
  • Postal Code
  • Email address

The Process after you have submitted the form

Once you submit the online Interest to Sponsor form, you will be allotted a confirmation number. You must make a note of this number and keep it for future reference. As just discussed, the sponsors will be selected randomly by the IRCC among the applicants who have submitted the complete online form.

After February 2, 2017, the selected sponsors will be given email intimation by the IRCC. If you have received the email notification from IRCC about your selection for PGP, you will have 90 days to submit the complete application for PGP along with the essential documents attached. The essential documents are likely to include the tax records, civil status documents, etc.

Eligibility Requirements for PGP

Though process of application has changed by IRCC, however, no change has been made in the eligibility requirements of PGP.

Here are the key requirements a sponsor of the PGP need to meet:
  • You must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident
  • Need to be 18 years or above
  • Must fulfill the minimum essential income criteriafor the PGP by submitting notices of assessment issued by the Canadian Revenue Agency (CRA) in support of their sponsorship
  • The sponsors residing in Quebec province of Canada require meeting specific income requirements, unlike from sponsors in the rest of Canada.
  • You also need to show that you have met the minimum essential income for 3 successive years. If you are married or in a common-law relationship, the income of both persons can be included
  • The sponsor as well as sponsored parents/grandparents needs to sign a sponsorship agreement that obligates the sponsor to give financial support to the sponsored person for up to 20 years. The agreement also says that the person becoming a permanent resident will make every attempt to support themselves. The sponsors in Quebec need to meet different requirements in this regard.
  • Sponsors from Quebec need to satisfy the specific criteria set by the Quebec government.
