Parent & Grandparents Program of Canada to open from 13th October 2020

abc The Canadian government has announced to open the Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP) with effect from October 13, 2020. Marco Mendicino- the Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, on 5th October, announced details about the opening of the Parents and Grandparents (PGP) Program for the year 2020. It is part of government's commitment to reunite the families.

Opening of Parent & Grandparents Program

The PGP is open from 12 p.m. EDT on October 13, 2020, to 12 p.m. EST on November 3, 2020. Hence, in this period of three weeks, the Canadian citizens and permanent residents, who want to sponsor their parents and grandparents to come to Canada, will get a time to submit an interest to sponsor form online.

It will be a fair and transparent process, wherein the IRCC (Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada) will randomly choose potential sponsors and issue them an invitation to submit an application. Further, the selected applicants will get 60 days to submit their application.

The option is available to persons with disabilities, who are not able to use the online form. Such persons can request the interest to sponsor form in an alternative format (paper copy, Braille or large print) by communicating about the same to IRCC.

Temporary policy for Income Requirement

In view of the recent pandemic caused circumstances, several applicants have been financially impacted; hence, the IRCC is announcing a temporary public policy that will lessen the income requirement for the 2020 tax year to the minimum necessary income, in place of the minimum necessary income plus 30%.

The Canadian government realizes the need and importance for families to be together, predominantly during tough times. The introduction of the 2020 Parents and Grandparents Program shapes on the government's initiatives to prioritize the sanction of 49,000 family sponsorship applications by the end of this year, i.e. 31st December 2020.

Moreover, it is also in accordance with last week's announcement of the government that process to unify more families and approve compassionate cases within the present border restrictions.

As part of 2020 PGP intake, the government will accept a maximum of 10,000 applications for processing. Next year, the IRCC (Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada) will open a new intake of interest to sponsor forms to accept a total of 30,000 new applications.
