Newfoundland & Labrador - the most easterly province of Canada located on Newfoundland Island is likely to double its annual immigration target in coming months. The federal cabinet minister Seamus O'Regan has announced this in a key event held in the province this week. This is an important news considering projected decline in the working age population of the province in next few years.
Double Immigration Target for Newfoundland & Labrador
As per O'Regan, he had a discussion with Immigration Minister, Ahmed Hussen with regards to raising the immigration target of Newfoundland & Labrador from 1,700 to minimum 4,000 by the year 2022 and both agreed to make it happen. He emphasized on the need of increasing immigration number to 4,000 a year to deal with the challenges emerged as result of ageing workforce and out migration. Reduced tax base of the province has been one of the key consequence of the low population in the region.
Speaking about the expected rise in the immigration rate, O'Regan said "We need a minimum of 4,000 new immigrants a year in this province just to maintain the status quo," O,Regan said. "But I'm not interested in maintaining the status quo. I'm interested in growing this economy. I'm interested in more jobs, in higher profits, in increased prosperity - and that means more immigrants. A lot more."
Province is facing challenges due to low popular growth
The province of Newfoundland & Labrador is facing multiple challenges with regards to low population growth. As per the projection of provincial government, the workforce of the province will decrease by ten percent by 2025 and consequently, the working population of the province will decrease by 35,000. This will be a critical situation to be in at that point of time. Hence, the key measures are needs to be taken now to deal with the future challenges.
The government has been taking steps to increase the immigrate rate of the province in last few years as newcomers in the province increased to 1,122 in 2015 from just 546 per year in 2007.
Province is ready to welcome Newcomers
As per O'Regan, the province and its communities are ready to welcome the newcomers. He praised the new immigrants mentioning that they create more employment opportunities, depend less on social grants and make valuable contribution to the economy and society as well.
