Newfoundland and Labrador the eastern most Atlantic province of Canada is likely to better the immigration target, which was set to achieve by the province in 2022. The province is pleased with the number of applications it is receiving lately, though the immigration strategy of the province was planned in way back in 2017. Newfoundland and Labrador Immigration Strategy

Two years back, the government of Newfoundland and Labrador estimated to admit around 1,700 immigrants per year (50 percent more of 2015 immigration rate) by the end of 2022. In the year 2015, total 1,122 immigrants were welcomed.

As per Bernard Davis, the Minister of Advanced Education, Skills and Labour, Newfoundland and Labrador, the provincial government is expecting to exceed the pre-planned immigration goal by the end of this fiscal year quite comprehensively. The number of application received by the province are double this year, compared to the year 2018. This may be due to the two key initiatives taken by the government in 2017, i.e.

  • Five-year immigration strategy of the Newfoundland and
  • Atlantic Immigration Pilot Program (AIPP) of IRCC (Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada).

Processing time has to be faster

Well, there is one key concern that has comes with this pleasing news of upsurge in the total number of applications being received, i.e. the delay in the processing time of applications. The processing time has doubled in last few months, as per the reports.

Speaking about the processing time Bernard Davis said, "We can't expect individuals to wait in a queue."He further added, “We want to maintain our integrity and make sure that people feel supported the whole way through."

To combat such challenges, the government is now planning to revise its 5-year strategy. The details will revealed later in the year, however, retention of the incoming immigrants will be on the priority list for sure.
