New Zealand government has announced to make the skilled immigration to the country stricter. The new changes to the parameters of Skilled Worker Visa aim at controlling the drastically increased immigration level in the NZ in last couple of years. The announcement in this regard came Wednesday, April 19, 2017, i.e. just a day after Australia’s Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull announced to scrap its popular 457 visa program for temporary foreign workers.

Tougher NZ Skilled Visa Requirements

The announcement of restricting the skilled visa immigration from New Zealand government is being seen in context of the recent immigration announcements from Australia and USA. Although, the government has given their reasons for making skilled visa requirements stricter, i.e. overcrowding of key NZ cities, housing shortages, burden on infrastructure. As per latest reports, over 70,000 immigrants moved to New Zealand in 2016 and most of them went on to settle in the city of Auckland, the population of which now reached to about 1.5 million.

Emphasizing on Kiwis-first

Michael Woodhouse – the honorable Immigration Minister of New Zealand, has stated that the government is emphasizing on Kiwis-first approach. As per Michael Woodhouse, It’s important that our immigration settings are attracting the right people, with the right skills, to help fill genuine skill shortages and contribute to our growing economy,” he said.“That is why we are making a number of changes to our permanent and temporary immigration settings aimed at managing the number, and improving the quality, of migrants coming to New Zealand.”

What are the key changes?

The key changes in the skilled worker visa requirements includes increasing the income threshold to about NZ$50,000 (Ł27,500) per year. Also, the individuals earning NZ$73,000 and more would be classified as high-skilled.

Moreover, the work visas to low-skilled workers would be restricted to 3 years. After this period a compulsory stand-down period will be imposed prior to workers can apply again.

The changes likely to impact the vast number of immigrants from different countries, particularly, the immigration aspirants from countries, i.e. China, Britain, and India, South Africa and Philippines will be largely affected. The New Zealand government is seem to be following the policy of Australia announced recently to cherry pick the best and brightest from overseas countries. This year has been year of tightening immigration rules in view of USA, Australia, and now New Zealand announcing stricter requirements for skilled migrants. Though, countries like Canada, still stand out as the most immigrant friendly county in the world with lenient immigration policy.
