Canada Introduces New Pilot Program to Lure Immigrants towards Rural & Northern Communities

Canadian government has revealed a new immigration pilot program for the Northern and rural Communities of the country. This new pilot program will offer the permanent residency pathway to the immigration applicants with different skill levels. The pilot is for the 5 years, which will help the some key regions to lure and retain the overseas skilled professionals and workers. These key regions, are rural and northern communities in the province of Ontario, Western Canada, etc. Let's find more about this new pilot announced by the government.

New Pilot for Rural and Northern Territories

The new Pilot for Rural and Northern has been designed on the pattern of Atlantic Immigration Pilot Program (AIPP)launched by the government in the year 2017. The new pilot shall offers the PR pathway to the immigration applicants possessing different skills in the communities (which are eligible) of the following key provinces and territories, i.e.

  • Ontario
  • Saskatchewan
  • British Columbia
  • Manitoba
  • Alberta
  • Yukon
  • Northwest Territories
  • Nunavut

What are Eligible Communities?

As per Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has defined the communities eligible for the new pilot program for rural and northern. As per IRCC qualifying communities can be cities with a population of 50,000 or less located minimum 75 kilometers from the core of a metropolitan area of 100,000 or more, or a city of up to 200,000 dwellers that fall in the category of remote. Like AIPP, the new pilot will also function along side the already existing Provincial Nominee Programs(PNPs).

AIPP for Atlantic Provinces

Already existing Employer-driven Atlantic Immigration Pilot Program operate with businesses in the Atlantic Provinces of the maple leaf country, i.e.

  • Nova Scotia,
  • New Brunswick,
  • Prince Edward Island and
  • Newfoundland and Labrador

The AIPP help the above Atlantic Provinces to employ foreign workers for vacancies they are not able to fill locally. Last year, Atlantic Immigration Pilot Program helped the Atlantic province to authorize close to 2,500 overseas workers and foreign students for PR. However the IRCC has not announced the quota for the new Pilot for rural and Northern.

Eligible Communities need to submit application by 1st March 2019

Speaking on the occasion of the launch of New Pilot, Canada's Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, Ahmed Hussen said, "By creating an immigration pilot aimed at rural and northern communities, we're looking to ensure that the benefits of immigration are shared across the country,"

At now the IRCC is currently looking for applications from eligible communities in the recognized provinces and territories, which are interested in participating in the pilot.The interested communities must coordinate with a local economic development organization to submit the application by March, 2019. The selected communities will be announced later in the year, i.e. possibly in the spring.

Apart from other parameters, the selected communities for participation in the Rural and Northern Pilot will have to show that they have employment opportunities available and will be actively involved in linking the immigration candidates to jobs.The further information with regards to process of immigration pilot for rural and northern will be announced and informed later in the year.
