New Brunswick Confirms opening of a new Immigration Pilot for International Students

Canadian province New Brunswick has announced a new immigration pilot for the overseas students, for the private career college graduates in the province. With effect from April 1, 2022, Graduates from four private career colleges in New Brunswick, i.e. Atlantic Business College, Eastern College, McKenzie College, or Oulton College and who have studied in one of 19-targeted occupations will be able to apply for permanent residency under a new pilot program.

New Immigration Pilot for International Students

Speaking about the new immigration pilot Labour Minister Trevor Holder said, “This initiative is something we have been working on for quite some time and we are pleased to get it across the line,”

He further added, “Newcomers are key to addressing the challenges of our labour market, and by providing this additional immigration stream we are empowering more of our post-secondary institutions to develop the skilled workers that New Brunswick needs.”

Under the pilot program in NB, individuals graduating from one of the below four colleges, along with training for any one 19 occupations will be able to apply to the New Brunswick Provincial Nominee Program (NBPNP) beginning 1 April 2022.

  • Atlantic Business College, 
  • Eastern College, 
  • McKenzie College, 
  • Oulton College

Labour Shortages behind the new pilot

The new immigration Pilot is the result of partnership between Opportunities NB and Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). As per Opportunities NB Minister Arlene Dunn with rising competition for skilled labour, a plan to convert international students into permanent residents is essential.

The new pilot shall permit the graduates to work and live in the NB, while they wait for PR status. The targeted occupations for this pilot comprise the following:

  • social and community service workers;
  • early childhood educators and assistants;
  • educational assistants;
  • health-care aides;
  • home support workers;
  • licensed practical nurses;
  • paramedics and related occupations;
  • medical laboratory technologists;
  • medical laboratory technicians and pathologists’ assistants;
  • medical administrative assistants;
  • computer programmers and interactive media developers;
  • web designers and developers;
  • computer network technicians;
  • user support technicians;
  • accounting technicians and bookkeepers;
  • payroll clerks;
  • shippers and receivers;
  • supply chain and logistics supervisors; and
  • Production logistics co-ordinators.
