IRCC provides another chance to International students with PGWP to gain Canadian Work Experience The new update from the Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) will certainly give respite to the International students seeking Permanent Residency (PR) Visa in Canada. The global pandemic caused disruption has affected many post-graduation work permit (PGWP) holders and their chances of obtaining Canadian work experience, essential to apply for a PR visa in Canada.

However, the Canadian government is now giving them a fresh chance to gain the necessary work experience in the maple leaf country, as per IRCC's latest announcement.

International students with PGWP can apply for an Open Work Permit

As per the latest announcement from Mr. Marco E. L. Mendicino, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, the former international students with an active or expired PGWP (post-graduation work permit) will have the opportunity to apply for an open work permit. Speaking about this rule change, Mr. Mendicino said,

"Whether as nurses on the pandemic's front lines or as founders of some of the most promising start-ups, international students are giving back to communities across Canada as we continue the fight against the pandemic. Their status may be temporary, but the contributions of international students are lasting."

He further added, "This new policy means that young students from abroad who have studied here can stay and find work while ensuring that Canada meets the urgent needs of our economy for today and tomorrow. Our message to international students and graduates is simple: we don't just want you to study here, we want you to stay here."

The foreign citizens in Canada with an expired or expiring PGWP due to Global pandemic will have a unique opportunity to apply for another open work permit. These will be effective for 18 months and will permit the former international students to stay in Canada, continue to look for employment and build their future in the maple leaf country.
