Canadian government will raise the application cap for Parent and Grandparent Program (PGP) to 20,000 in 2019. Also, it will scrap the existing lottery system of selecting applications and First come, First Served' pattern of application will return once again. Every year tens of thousands of Canadians apply for PGP sponsorship to bring their parents to Canada as permanent residents. The news will surely please all such Canadians.
PGP cap will increase to 20,000 in 2019
The IRCC (Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada) has announced its PGP application target for next year on August 20, 2019. It also announced to scrap the existing application process of selecting the random applications for consideration, rather it will accept the Invitations to Apply (ITAs) based on the earlier 'First come, First Served' pattern.
Random selection process was introduced by IRCC in the year 2017, however, now it is scraping the same and going back to old first come first served pattern of accepting the applications from the interested sponsors of Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP). The random selection of applications was being criticized widely by the applicants, despite the assurance of the government that it is transparent and completely fair.
Changes introduced Considering Users concerns
As per IRCC, the new changes in the process have been made keeping in mind the concerns of the users. The government reviewed the whole process of Parent and Grandparent program and finally decided to implement a few key changes to update the same to enhance users' experience.
Speaking about the announcement, Immigration Minister, Ahmed Hussen said, "Changes are evidence of the Government of Canada's commitment to helping families live, work and thrive together, in Canada."
Decrease in the Backlog is making way for the increase in the PGP cap
The significant reduction in the backlog of PGP applications has enabled the government to raise the PGP quota to 20,000 for the year 2019. In the month of June, 2018 the pending applications have been reduced to just 26,000 from over 1, 50,000 seven years back.
Cap increased for this year as well
Last month, government also increased the PGP application cap for this year, i.e. 2018, from 10,000 to 17,000. For this increased quota, it held 2nd invitation round in July, 2018 itself.
The applicants, looking to apply for PGP sponsorship in 2019, they require submitting the 'Interest to Sponsor' form in the beginning of the year only.
