Posted - 02, Jan 2019

With effect from December 31, 2018, the biometric collection rule is applicable to the temporary and permanent residency visa applicants from Asia, Asia Pacific and America. The biometric collection program is already applicable for the rest of the countries, however, for Asia and America, it started from the 31st last month, i.e. couple of days back. Let's find out more about this new system and its significance in Canada immigration.

Biometric Collection Program of Canada

As per the biometrics collection program effective December 31, 2018, natives from countries from Asia, Asia Pacific and the Americas will require providing their fingerprints and photo (biometrics) when applying for the following visa categories, i.e. visitor visa, study or work permit, or for permanent residence. For the applicants from countries, i.e. Europe, the Middle East and Africa this rule is already applicable since July 31, 2018.

With new biometrics system, it will be easier for IRCC officers to barthe applicants, who are likely to cause a risk to the safety and security of Canadians. The new biometric program will help the officials authenticate travellers' identities, makes processing applications easier and simplifies entry for genuine travellers. The biometric system will be new step to the whole immigration process.

Significance of Biometric system

Speaking about the new biometric collection program, Mr. Ahmed Hussen, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship said, "Collecting biometrics from most foreign travellers coming to Canada makes sense on so many levels: it strengthens the integrity of our immigration system, while helping protect the safety and security of Canadians. Not only does biometrics collection give us a reliable, accurate tool to establish a traveller's identity, but it also improves our ability to process applications and the entry of people upon arrival in Canada".
