Canada is all set to welcome 300,000 newcomers in the year 2017 as per its new immigration target. The immigration plan in this regard has been released by the federal government on October 31, 2016. The new immigration plan for 2017 may please those individuals, who have plans to come to Canada via economic or family sponsorship programs.

Increase in the Economic and family Sponsored Immigration

As per the immigration plan 2017, economic and sponsored immigration in Canada has been increased. However, the percentage of refugee and protected persons immigration has decreased in the 2017 annual immigration target compared to year 2016. Though the total target (i.e. 40,000) for both these programs are still way above compared what it was during the term of Conservative Government.

In the new immigration plan, the economic immigration increased to 1, 72,500 with the increase of 7.41% compared to target of 2016. The target for family type or family sponsored immigration has been increased to 84,000 with the total increase of 5 percent compared to last year.

In 2017, Canada is likely to welcome about 320,000 newcomers

Canada is likely to welcome a total of 320,000 newcomers in the country in the year 2017. The liberal government last year only showed their intentions about increasing immigration level in future when they decided the immigration target of about 305,000 immigrants in 2016.

There is an opinion about immigration increase across Canada

The immigration Minister also stated during various press meets and conferences that there is an opinion among different communities and industries that Canada needs more immigrants to sustain its economic growth and productivity, which may get affected due to ageing population in the country.

John McCallum, the Immigration Minister of Canada, met with several stakeholders across the country before releasing the Immigration plan for 2017. As per McCallum, ”the 2017 levels plan will put Canada in a strong position for the future and support our overall economic and social development as a country.”
