By Rajneesh Kumar Posted 24, Aug 2016

visas default image The demand has come to rise Canadas immigration level greater than the three times what it is right now, i.e. up to One Million a year. The demand has come from the CEO of top pension funds in Canada. John Ruffolo is a Chief Executive Officer of the OMERS Ventures. The OMERS is the top pension funds in Canada. As per him, the innovation and immigration of highly skilled workers can play a huge role in the growth and development of Canada. Ruffolo is also the Vice-Chairman of the Council of Canadian Innovators.

Ageing Population A huge concern

As per Ruffolos article in Globe and Mail, Canada needs a robust national access-to-talent strategy. We should increase immigration. By 2025, 30 per cent of our population will be 60 and older to mitigate this imbalance, Canada would need to increase immigration for each of the next five years to one million people.

Focus on immigration of young overseas skilled workers

He has emphasized on focusing on the immigration of young foreign skilled workers between the ages of 20 to 39. As per him, it would counterbalance the ageing population in the country. If such steps are not taken soon, it will result in the adverse affects, such as, high national debt, increase in taxes, fall in the number of social programs, etc.

In Ruffolos words, Some people might call this plan bold. But I hesitate to say that, because scaling up Canadas economy through immigration is an old idea. From 1901 to 1911, our countrys population increased from 5.4 million to about 7.2 million, with immigration accounting for the entire net increase. Thats a 33-per-cent increase. By comparison, a goal of one million people for each of the next five years is comparatively modest 41 million people represent a population increase of just 14 per cent.

Immigration must be planned systematically

His statement clearly indicates that Canada has traditionally been benefited through immigration and hence, there is no harm if the government attempts to enhance the socioeconomic growth by the way of immigration level increase.

However, the immigration should be phased and planned wisely and systematically, keeping in mind the labour and industry needs of the country. We need the immigrants who successfully increase the productivity of the country by the way of innovative approach. The new immigrants may include skilled trades people, investors with capital, science graduates, etc.

The Immigration Minister John McCallum has already revealed the intentions of the government to substantially increase the immigration in the country. And few immigration rule changes and new proposals might be seen in the coming fall regarding the same.

Its the right time to move to Canada for skilled workers

Looking at the governments statements and the buzz around, it is clear that Canada will invite a huge number of skilled professionals in coming years. Hence, if you are a skilled worker planning to live and work in Canada its the high time to apply for the same.
