Canada Elections- Liberals Return to power, all Set to form a Minority Government

By Rajneesh Kumar Posted 22, Oct 2019

visas default image Over a month long election campaign finally ended on 21st October 2019, as Canadians decided to give one more chance to Justin Trudeau lead Liberal government of Canada. Liberals likely to claim the most seats in the parliament, however, their second term is going to be much more challenging in view of the likely minority government to be formed at the centre. Now, they will have to depend on the other parties as well for passing a legislation in the parliament.

Liberals all set to form a minority government

Canadian federal elections were closely fought this time around as Liberals were neck-and-neck with their arch rivals, i.e. Conservative party. This election was being seen as a referendum on Trudeau government, which had a bumpy ride at the centre in last few years.

With the latest election result one can assume that Trudeau's grip on Canadian voters has visibly loosened as liberals didn't get the clear majority, however, Conservative leader Andrew Scheer, must be disappointed as his party was not able to cash in the same by any means. On Monday night, Canadian elected a minority Liberal government.

After the two major parties, resurgent Bloc Quebecois won the third-most seats, while New Democratic Party (NDP) and the Green Party remained on the 4th and 5th spot respectively.

Was Immigration really an issue in the federal elections?

The liberal government of Canada has been soft on Immigrants and took several steps to enhance the immigration to Canada. The proposed immigration plan of Canada promises to bring over 1 million permanent residents to Canada by 2021.

However, the Canadians once again showed their faith on the Liberals, which means immigration was not really an issue. The recent survey also proved that most Canadians actually agree to increased immigration target. Moreover, the new People's Party of Canada (PPC), which campaigned on a commitment to halve the annual number of immigrants to Canada, couldn't even win a single seat.

How Canada's Immigration policy will shape from here

The Trudeau government was having a clear majority in its last term, which helped the ruling party a lot in making changes to various rules and regulations at will. However, with a minority government this time around, it will not be cake walk for the government to pass legislation in the parliament and bring about any change at will.

Canada's Immigration policy is likely to remain positive

The minority government would mean that the liberals will now have to ensure a common ground among their challengers in Parliament in order to pass legislation.

However, considering election campaign of most of the political parties represented in the House of Commons was revolving around the pro-immigration policies, attaining majority support for immigration policies unlikely to be tough for the government.
