Canada Continues to accept spousal immigration applications in spite of the Covid-19 row

The Canadian government has announced that it will continue to accept and process the spousal and common-law sponsorship applications for those partners who are both in Canada and outside Canada, despite the row over the Covid-19 pandemic.

So, if you have didn't get the chance earlier to file application with the Canadian Immigration authority, you have the opportunity to file the same now.

The Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada has IRCC has already expressed that they will continue to accept and process new applications for permanent residence and may accept incomplete applications for during the Covid-19 pandemic. This will actually allow the applicant not to postpone a submission simply because he/she is not able to acquire a required document due to service interruptions caused by COVID-19.

In case, you will be filing a new spouse or common-law sponsorship application shortly and you are not able to submit the essential supporting documentation, you need to provide a detailed letter of explanation describing the COVID related delays.

The applications, which are not complete, will be kept and reviewed in 90 days. If the application is not complete even in 60 days, the relevant officers will request the missing documents with an extra deadline of 90-day.

Exemptions from Travel Restrictions

Apart from accepting the applications and inviting the candidates, amid Covid-19 row, Canada has also exempted the immigrants under certain category from the travel restrictions. Here are the key exemptions:
  • seasonal agricultural workers, fish/seafood workers, caregivers and all other temporary foreign workers
  • international students who held a valid study permit, or had been approved for a study permit, when the travel restrictions took effect on March 18, 2020
  • permanent resident applicants who had been approved for permanent residence before the travel restrictions were announced on March 18, 2020, but who had not yet travelled to Canada
