Australian government is taking steps for faster Visa applications processing

The government of Australia is taking various measures to clear the backlog and process the visa application faster. At now, clearing the backlog of visa applications is priority for the Department of Home Affairs (DHA), Australia following the instructions from Prime Minister and the Minister for Immigration, Citizenship and Multicultural Affairs.

Both have directed the DHA to dedicate more staff to addressing the existing visa backlog.

Australia Prioritizing faster visa application processing

The Department of Home Affairs, Australia is now focusing on clearing backlogs and ensuring faster application processing. The Department is giving preference to processing of key overseas caseloads - temporary skilled, student and visitor. This is to make certain that more people can travel to Australia and make their contribution to economic growth, and combat labour shortages.

Andrew Giles, the minister for Immigration, Citizenship and Multicultural Affairs, is evaluating all options available to address the backlog. Steps taken already are:

  • Officers earlier focused on travel exemptions have been redirected to visa processing, with approximately 140 new staff in visa processing roles since May 2022.
  • Further, an enhanced capacity to work overtime, drawn from across the Department and the Australian Border Force has been setup.

While explaining about the efforts to clear application backlog, Minister Giles said, “The number of applications received in June 2022 is 6.5% higher than May 2022 – over the same period, there was a 10.6% increase in applications finalised.”

As per the department, 745,000 visa applications have been finalised since the beginning of June 2022, comprising more than 645,000 overseas visa applications. This includes:

  • 388,000 visitor visas,
  • 62,000 student visas and
  • 9,550 temporary skilled visas.

Minister Giles further added, “The processing of visas will continue to be a major priority for this Government – but reducing the backlog of applications can't happen overnight.

“People reallocated to dealing with the visa applications on hand need to be trained and skilled before they can go about this important work.

“The former Government devalued immigration, with the visa application backlog increasing to nearly 1,000,000 on their watch. The Albanese Government is determined to reduce the backlog and restore the importance of the immigration function of our Government.”

With increase in allocation of Skilled visa places (109,900) for the program year 2022-23  and speeding of application processing, it’s the perfect time for the Australian visa aspirant to apply for the relevant Skilled, student or visitor visa, etc.
