Australian Citizenship Test to be updated from 15 November 2020- focus on Australian values

Australian government is updating the Citizenship Test with effect from November 15, 2020. The new changes in the test will focus on the Australian values. Alan Tudge- the acting Minister for Immigration, Citizenship, Migrant Services and Multicultural Affairs has confirmed that the is going to be updated for the first time in over a decade to include a dedicated section on Australian values.

Updated Australian Citizenship Test

Speaking about the new changes in the Citizenship Mr. Alan Tudge said, "Our Australian values are important. They have helped shape our country and they are the reason why so many people want to become Australian citizens,"

"The updated Citizenship Test will have new and more meaningful questions that require potential citizens to understand and commit to our values like freedom of speech, mutual respect, equality of opportunity, the importance of democracy and the rule of law.

"We are asking those who apply for citizenship to understand our values more deeply before they make the ultimate commitment to our nation."

Format of the Citizenship Test

The updated Citizenship Test will have 20 MSQs (multiple-choice questions). Out of these questions, five will be on Australian values. An applicant will be required to appropriately answer all five of such questions on Australian values, with a mark of minimum 75 % overall, to clear the test.

However, there won't be any change to the English language ability or residency requirements for Australian citizenship.

These citizenship test changes have been announced in accordance with Australian Citizenship Day. Last year, 204,000 people became Australian citizens, and 2500 more joined them on Australia Citizenship Day (17th September) in 30 different ceremonies.

Despite the disruption caused by the COVID-19, since 31 March 2020, over 85,000 people from every state and territory have become citizens of Australia in online ceremonies. The testing has also resumed all over Australia, except Victoria.

Moreover, with effect from 30 October 2020, most new visa and citizenship candidates required affirming the updated Australian Values Statement (AVS). The updated AVS will reflect the shared values of Australian society much better, comprising the rule of law, freedom of religion, freedom of speech, freedom of association and equality of opportunity for all Australians.
