Australia Retains the Immigration target of 160,000 visa places for 2020-21 despite covid-19

abc Australian government has confirmed to retain its immigration target of last year, i.e. 2019-20, this year as well. It means the government will retain the occupation ceiling of 160,000 this year as well.

The government has shared these details in a Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) document, which is based on Migration Program Planning and Delivery.

Australia sustains last year immigration target

Find below the key categories included in annual target:
  • The government has allocated 108,682 places for the Skill stream.-
  • The family stream have received the allocation of 47,732 places
  • Special Eligibility stream received 236 places
  • Child Visa stream got the allocation of 3,350 places

Nomination to state and territories

As per the Australian government, the State and Territory nominated visa programs likely to play a key part in the economic rescue and hence it will continue to be a part of Australia's Migration Program.

The Department of Home Affairs, Australia is mulling as to how best it can use the Migration Program in the months to come in order to drive economic development in the country. Hence, the nominations will be made obtainable to States and Territories in the below visa categories:
  • Skilled - Nominated (subclass 190).
  • Skilled Employer Sponsored Regional (Provisional) (subclass 491)
  • Business Innovation and Investment Program.
As far as travel update are concerned, as of now, only Australian permanent residents, citizens, immediate family members of Aussie PR holder and citizens or New Zealand citizens generally resident in Australia can travel to Australia.
