The government of Australia is living up to its promise to enhance the regional migration. In last few months the government has taken various steps to ensure it meets its target of boosting the migration in regional parts of the country. The Morrison government has ensured that visa system supports Australian businesses and pushes skilled migrants to the regions.

Let's find out more about the steps taken by the government for the regional migration enhancement and the subsequent results of the same.

Aussie Government efforts to push the Regional Migration

Australia has decreased the cap for the country's permanent migration program from 190,000 to 160,000 visa places.Within this limit, the government has kept 23,000 places for regional visas. Australia's program year starts in July, and in the first quarter of this year, Aussie government has issued over 6,350 regional visas with a rise of 124 per cent, compared to last year during the same period.

Speaking about government's effort for reginal migration push, Minister for Immigration, Citizenship, Migrant Services and Multicultural Affairs David Coleman said, "Governments have always had a strong view about the total number of people who come to Australia through our immigration system, but what we're doing now is increasing the focus on the distribution of where those people go,.

"Already we're seeing results. The Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme (RSMS) has increased by 179 per cent and the Regional Skilled Sponsored visa has increased by 79 per cent, meaning we are well on track to meet our target of 23,000 regional visas by the end of the program year.

"These regional visas are a key pillar of our Population Plan which is working to ease the pressure on the big capitals while supporting the growth of those regions that want more people."

Two New Regional Visas Announced by government

At the start of the year, Australia announced two new provisional skilled regional visas. These visas will allow regional businesses to fill vacancies quickly when local workers are not available, and inspire overseas skilled migrants and their families to settle and stay in regional parts of the country.

Both the new regional visas will be applicable from 16th November 2019,and will replace the existing RSMS and Regional Skilled Sponsored visas. As a step towards promoting the regional migration, Minister Coleman has set up six new Regional Outreach Officers to the states and territories to offer support to regional employers, helping them understand their skilled visa options.
