Skilled Employer Sponsored Regional (Provisional) visa (subclass 494)

Australia’s government on November 16, 2019 has launched the new Skilled Employer-Sponsored Regional (Provisional) visa subclass 494. It has replaced the old Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme visa Subclass 187.

This visa is for skilled workers who have received a nomination from an Australian employer lawfully operating their business in Australia. To work in the nominated occupation, you need to have employment in the same occupation and a position within the business sponsoring you or in that, business’s associated entity.

This associated entity should be located in a designated regional area of Australia.Before you apply for the visa, your employer requires you to lodge a nomination application for you.

The Skilled Employer Sponsored Regional (Provisional) visa (subclass 494) has three main streams, i.e.

Employer Sponsored stream

This particular stream of Subclass 494 visaallows regional employers to address identified labour shortages within their respective constituency by sponsoring foreign skilled workers where employers cannotfindasuitable skilled Australian worker. With this visa stream you can:

  • ​You can live, work and study only in selected regional areas of Australia
  • You can apply for Australia PR visa after 3 years from the time your visa is granted

Labour Agreement stream

This stream is for those skilled workers, who are nominated by employers,and have a labour agreement. Labour agreements are developed between the Government of Australia (represented by the Department of Home Affairs, Australia) and employers.

​​​​​​​​Your employer needs to have an ongoing labour agreement with the government of Australia.

Subsequent entrant

This particular visa stream is for members of the family unit of a Skilled Employer Sponsored Regional (SESR) (Provisional) visa (subclass 494) holder who are applying individually for their SESR visa and want to join the primary SESR visa holder in Australia.

All three above-mentioned visas are allocated by the Department of Home Affairs, Australia for five years and have the same visa fee as well, i.e. AUD 4,115

Here are the key requirements of Subclass 494 Visa.


Age

The upper age limit is 45, i.e. you must be under the age of 45 years, unless an exemption applies to your case

Nomination from Australian employer

You need to be nominated by an Australian employer (in regional Australia) to work in an occupation on the relevant SOL

Skill Assessment

Need to have an appropriate skills assessment from an approved assessing authority, lest an exemption applies

Minimum Points

You need to work only for your sponsor or associated entity unless an exemption applies to your case

IELTS Test for English Proficiency

You need to fulfil minimum criteria of English language proficiency. Provide the approved English proficiency test, i.e. IELTS

Medical and PCC

You must get medical certificate and Police Clearance Certificate (PCC) to prove good health and character status
