How to Apply Canadian PR Visa from USA?

Want to move to Canada from the USA? Well, it's a wise decision considering the ambiguity H-1B Visa holders are facing at the moment about their pending Green Card application in the USA. Canada is a perfect alternate for the US regarding its proximity to the United States of America and other parallels in terms of lifestyle, infrastructure, professional opportunities, cultural diversity, etc.

Unlike the USA, Canada offers a relatively easy and direct pathway to permanent residency to skilled workers. Let's look at how you can obtain PR in Canada as a skilled worker from the USA.

Pathways to apply for Canadian Permanent Residency Visa from the USA

Canada takes pride in its one of the most organized point-based online immigration systems globally, i.e. Federal Express Entry System. It is the fastest and hassle-free way of moving to Canada as a permanent resident.

PR through Express Entry System

Express Entry System is a point-based online immigration system launched by IRCC (Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada) in January 2015. It selects the suitably skilled workers to meet the demand of the Canadian labour market.

Express Entry follows a point system called CRS (Comprehensive Ranking System). The CRS allocate points to the registered applicants based on their key profile factors, i.e. age, education, work experience, language proficiency (English or French), etc. The IRCC launch a draw every fortnight to choose the candidates with top CRS score. It announces cut off marks or CRS score requirement for each draw and candidates, who achieve the same get ITA (Invitation to Apply) for Canadian Permanent Residency Visa from IRCC.

Other pathways to obtain Canada PR

Express Entry is not the only pathway to get PR in Canada if you are a skilled worker. Canadian provinces also invite overseas skilled workers' applications through their respective Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs). Quebec – a central Canadian province also has its immigration program, i.e. Quebec Skilled Worker Program (QSWP), to invite skilled foreign workers.

Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs)

Almost every Canadian province has a Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) through which it invites application from skilled foreign workers and subsequently, nominate them for Canadian Permanent Residency (PR). Provincial Nominee Programs nominate the skilled workers as per the federal government's annual nomination quota.

Some popular PNPs of Canada are:

  • Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program (OINP) – Ontario Province
  • Saskatchewan Immigrant Nominee Program (SINP) – Saskatchewan
  • Nova Scotia Nominee Program (NSNP)- Nova Scotia
  • Alberta Immigrant Nominee Program (AINP)- Alberta
  • Manitoba Provincial Nominee Program (MPNP)- Manitoba

Almost every PNP has two main sub-categories, i.e.

Express Entry sub-category: Through this stream, a PNP can notify candidates from express entry pool to apply for nomination through PNP. If an applicant applies and gets selected, he gets additional 600 CRS points in Express Entry, which makes him eligible for ITA from IRCC.

Occupation in Demand Sub-category: This category is also for skilled workers, having skills and experience matching the in-demand occupation in a particular province. A province reveals the list of in-demand occupation and invites application for PNP from the interested applicants. If an applicant gets the nomination, he/she can directly apply to IRCC for Canada PR.

Quebec Skilled Worker Program (QSWP)

The  Quebec Skilled Worker Program (QSWP) is the immigration program of Quebec province in Canada. If you apply in QSWP and get selected, you will receive CSQ (Certificat de Selection du Quebec), which makes you eligible to apply for Canada PR visa directly to IRCC.
